Foreshortened by the telephoto lens, this view from just south of Taos shows the famous mountain, 70 miles away.

I first saw Pedernal in a book of paintings by Georgia O’Keffe years ago. On my second visit out to New Mexico in 2007, I travelled from Los Lunas to Abiquiuby a route which took me round the west side of it and emerged somewhere near the lake. Thanks for this photo, it’s a much better shot than the ones I took. I gather from various sources there are semi precious stones on its cindery peak, which is a devil to climb according to people who’ve done it.
O’Keeffe herself is credited with saying that if she painted Pedernal often enough, God would give it to her. Whether he did or whether he didn’t, her paintings of it always make me want to sing. So does this picture.

It’s just amazing to me that one can see it from so far away. I think these shapes in the landscape are very important somehow.

Next to “el Monte Sagrado” …. the ‘Cerro Pedernal’ is my Favorite mountain in New Mexico…..and have also seen it while in and around Taos…but would LOVE to see it up close and personal….Seems I heard Georgia was cremated and her ashes placed on the Pederanl…any truth to that??
Regardless, another DANDY photo John….and WE Thank YOU!!
Damn sure beats looking at a dead cat….but I understand your consternation with THAT situation!!
