This is the famous Ashley woodstove, once the darling of the Whole Earth Catalog. Good heat!

John,
I recall that you pretty much have to keep the stove going 24 x 7 in season. How do you remove the ashes? Is that what the brass rod protruding from the bottom is for? Is the ash removal a messy, daily pain in the ass? The dumb bells are there to keep them toasty for your daily work outs? I know you would really like better digs – but the pictures of the inside of your adobe always look wonderfully inviting!

Once in a while — not every day by any means — I shovel out what I can, pushing the coals over to one side. It’s not daily, but it is messy and a pain in the ass. Every once in a while I pick up the dumbells. They’re there to remind me. 🙂
